The technician marks attendance from an app on their own phone, and the check-in is stamped with time and location. Instead of "were they at work today", you get "they started at 9:12 near the first site" — a record that reflects how field work actually happens. Where it goes wrong
Battery and permissions. If the app is fighting the phone for background location, check-ins fail. A good app captures location at the moment of check-in rather than tracking continuously, which is lighter and less invasive.
Treating it as surveillance. Staff resist constant tracking, and rightly. Capturing attendance and job locations is reasonable; following someone all day is not. Be clear about what is recorded and why.
Poor connectivity. Field sites have weak signal. The app should let a technician check in offline and sync when the network returns, rather than blocking them.
